Microdermabrasion

We regret to inform you that Microdermabrasion services are no longer available at Hidden Gem.

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment whereby dead cells are removed from the surface of the skin using abrasive crystals. These crystals are directed at the skin through a nozzle which is moved across the area to be treated by the technician. The nozzle has two tubes, one inside the other, connected to it. The inner inside tube supplies the crystals while the outer tube sucks away the used crystal along with the dead skin cells.

The action is gentle and although is has a slight stinging sensation, it does not require the use of any anaesthetic creams or lotions. This treatment is a non-invasive method of correcting superficial blemishes resulting from trauma, ageing or damage through prolonged exposure to the sun. Removing dead cells in this manner encourages cellular renewal and promotes an even texture and appearance of the skin.
Early equipment used crystals of aluminum oxide (and some still do today), but they left a gritty residue on the skin. Also, some clients suffered from itchy eyes and throat, mild headaches while others experienced some respiratory problems. Our system uses sodium bicarbonate crystals (salt) which provide good abrasive qualities without health issues. This procedure has the benefit of low risk and rapid recovery over other skin resurfacing techniques.

At least 4 to 6 treatments will be necessary to produce effective results. However, when microdermabrasion treatments are combined with our Luminous C facials, the end results will be superior to microdermabrasion alone.

Microdermabrasion has been used to treat:
  • Fine lines, wrinkles, rhytides and acne.
  • Sun damage and age spots.
  • Certain types of scarring and stretch marks.
  • Uneven texture and discolouration of the skin.
  • Enlarged pores.
Results may include:
  • Improved skin colour and texture.
  • Diminished scar tissue.
  • Fewer breakouts.
  • Healthier skin appearance.
Although microdermabrasion is very effective for the skin problems listed, it will not be useful for deep wrinkles and scars, "ice pick" acne scars, or pigmentary disorders.

Clients cannot be treated if they have:
  • Used isotretinonin (Accutane) within the past 12 months.
  • Had a chemical peel within the last three months.
  • Active herpes (cold sores) (See Note 1)
  • Malignant skin tumors.
  • Certain keloid scars or moles in the treatment area.
  • Telangiectasia (Spider veins) in the treatment area (See Note 2)
  • Rosacea.
Pre-treatment requirements:
  • Avoid sun tanning or tanning beds for a least 3 days prior to each treatment.
  • Do not use skin bleaching products such as Hydroqinone for at least 7 days prior to each treatment.
  • Do not use Retin A for at least 7 days prior to treatment.
Post treatment requirements:
  • Use a good sunblock and moisturizer (See Note 3)
  • Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 1 week due to temporary increased sensitivity (See Note 4)
  • Avoid extreme cold on the treated area for at least 1 week.
  • Do not be rough on your skin when washing.
At the end of each treatment, the aesthetician may apply Sofblend* Post-Electrolysis Gel to reduce redness. This gel is a blend of Lavender and Roman Chamomile Essential oils in a base of Aloe Vera. The aesthetician will also apply a moisturizer and sunblock.

Inform your aesthetician if you:
  • Are using Retin-A or OTC creams that contain "exfoliation acids or prescription medication for skin problems.
  • Have had a chemical peel within the last three months.
  • Are using a topical anesthetic cream to reduce pain and are having any reaction such as an itchy rash.
  • Have any conditions listed on previous page.
Note 1 Hidden Gem sells an excellent cream for cold sores.

Note 2 Hidden Gem can treat spider veins inexpensively.

Note 3 Clients must adhere to the esthetician's post-treatment directions.

Note 4 Even short-term exposure to the sun or the use of tanning beds can be detrimental to your skin's health.
